After your stomach has recovered from juicy slabs of turkey (or Tofurky) and sweet cranberry sauce, why don’t you shed a few extra pounds at the Run Wild For A Child event (10K Run/Walk and 5K Run/Walk). For 25 years going strong, this Thanksgiving weekend run takes place in the beautiful setting of Golden Gate Park at the Bandshell/Music Concourse on November 29, 2009 (8:30am sharp to 11:30am)
Why is this event called Run Wild For A Child? The run/walk supports our Bay Area children by helping the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Drive collect donations of new unwrapped toys.
Those who participate in the 5K run/walk are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite childhood toy, and compete for prizes presented by Southwest Airlines – including Southwest Airlines tickets and a Hotel Carlton Luxury Weekend. However, everyone's a winner at the event, all registered runners receive a long-sleeve T-shirt with full color event logo and goodie bag. Medals are given to the top three men and women in nine different age categories.
Join the post race party held at the Bandshell/Music Concourse following the race to receive valuable information and enjoy free samples given out by sponsor booths. The cost to participate in the Run Wild For A Child events is between $15 and $35. For more information, contact Nancy Nobriga at (415) 759-2690 or

From Tempe, Arizona to Savannah, Georgia, the SkirtChaser Race Series has traveled the United States and will take over Golden Gate Park on November 15, 2009. From hot-to-trot walkers to pro-runners, locals will have a chance to tackle a 5K course that offers a Block Party at the end of the finish line. If you're wondering how the race got its name, women start first in what is known as the 'Catch Me' wave with men following behind three minutes later – as the 'SkirtChasers.'
While other races promise ribbons and T-shirts, the first person to cross the line of this event (no matter the gender) will take home a $500 grand prize. After the sweat, dirt (and sometimes tears), kick back with an after-party that promises live entertainment, activities (including dating games), and a fashion show. Fill up on free food, wine, and beer.
For more details or to sign up, check out
http://www.skirtchaser5k.com, but keep in mind – online registration ends on Nov 11, 2009 at midnight. Don't worry, you can still sign up on the day of the race. A portion of event proceeds will go towards Chances for Children – a not-for-profit organization centered on youth programs for the disadvantaged.

Who says you can't mix education and hauntingly good fun? This weekend, the California Academy of Sciences will provide two days full of Halloween activities. The entire month has allowed guests to meet (and sometimes physically greet) some of the more startling animals in the museum – now is your chance to enjoy special programs and other scary merriment.
On October 31, kick off your Halloween festivities by visiting the Academy for a family-friendly outing. Get your face painted or watch the antics of stilt walkers. Encourage the kiddies to win prizes for coming decked out in their Halloween best. Head for the Forum at 1:30pm to enjoy a special live animal program featuring centipedes, tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, and other creepy-crawlies.
If you're too old for trick-or-treating and long for an adult Halloween event, spend the evening at the Park Chalet with The Mermen and Friends on Saturday night. Come dressed to win prizes, as you listen to live music and other entertainers. The party begins at 9pm and continues on until 2am.
If you were unable to catch the first live animal show at the Academy, stretch your holiday weekend by spending Sunday (November 1) at the Academy for a repeat performance – same time and same place. Between 11am and 12:30pm, gather at the classroom to participate in a skeleton family craft that pays homage to Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

If you like bikes or beer…or beer and bikes, then Speedway Meadow has just the event for you this weekend. On Saturday, September 26, 2009 (11am to 5pm), one of the wackiest festivals in Golden Gate Park is taking place – the Tour de Fat. Thanks to New Belgian Ale, you can participate in this party for free and do something good in the process.
It's time to indulge in the live performances, games, drinks, and even the tunes of a New Orleans-style funeral. Why the funeral? Because some people choose to lay their cars to rest in exchange for bicycles during this event. That's right, they hand over their car, title, and keys for a "New Belgium, fully-loaded, hand-crafted, Fort Collins-built commuter bike and trailer." The festival also promises food – which usually runs out pretty quickly, so it's highly suggested that you come early.
Additionally, the sale of all beer will go towards two nonprofit organizations – the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. If you want to join in on the bike parade, registration is at 10am. For more information, check out

Can you stand five hours straight of laughter? If you come to Golden Gate Park on September 20, 2009 (12pm to 5pm), you'll get a chance to enjoy a free outdoor comedy concert that strictly caters to your funny bone. Providing the laughs are a collection of fine Bay Area comics and don’t be surprised if a special guest decides to make an impromptu appearance – like Robin Williams.
This free event takes place at Sharon Meadow (John F. Kennedy Drive and Kezar Drive) and is open to all, but if you're thinking of bringing along any little ones, keep in mind that the stage will deliver a colorful selection of PG-13 rated material. This year, Will Durst (an Emmy-nominated political satirist) presents some of his stand-up talent alongside 29 other comedians. Food and drinks will be available, including Ben & Jerry's ice cream and Gordon Biersch beer. For more information, check

Speedway Meadow will transform into a harmonious event on Saturday, September 12, 2009 (9am to 5pm) – welcoming all with open arms to a gathering of international musicians, visual artists, keynote speakers, and more than 200 exhibitors and green vendors.
The Power to the Peaceful festival has been educating attendees on issues of social justice, non-violence, and environmental sustainability since 1988. Over the years, what started as a local get-together has morphed into a pretty impressive event with more than 70,000 people assembling at what is now one of the largest free music festivals in the United States.
Start your morning with a yoga session before browsing the many information booths and enjoying the musical entertainment for the day: Michael Franti and Spearhead, Alanis Morissette, Sly & Robbie, and a collection of respectable DJs.
This free event is fun for the entire family with a kid's zone supplying carnival games, flag making, face painting, marionettes, and stilt walkers. The kiddies even have their own Kids Zone Stage of performers, including PopLyfe, Jaden, Peace Outs, and Gabby La La. The festival is also partnering with Clean Vibes (a company that provides environmentally responsible waste management) to make sure this green event takes it easy on Mother Nature. It's hard to believe, Lindy in the Park has been going strong for 13 years now. Starting at 11am, on Sunday, August 16, 2009, a special anniversary edition of the event will celebrate more than a decade of free swing dancing in Golden Gate Park. Not only will dancers and spectators enjoy extended music and dancing hours (until at least 3pm), but will also gather for a tasty potluck picnic.
If you're a beginner, don't be shy – Hep Jen is offering free swing dance lessons between 12pm and 12:30pm. This is a great time to meet up with old friends, make new connections, dance, and simply bask in the energy of the event. Remember this is a potluck picnic, so bring food, side dishes, salads, sweet treats, beverages, ice, plastic utensils, paper napkins and plates to share.
Lindy in the Park is the longest-running regular lindy hop dance event known to the San Francisco Bay Area – ever since August 18, 1996. Starting out with 13 participants equipped with a single boom box, the event has now grown to entertain between 100 and 200 dancers each week. Lindy in the Park will take place at the south sidewalk area located along John F. Kennedy Drive (between the de Young Museum and the north entrance to the Music Concourse).

Foster your child's interest in science and geology by encouraging a 'citizen scientist' within your family. The California Academy of Sciences (located at Golden Gate Park) is offering spaces to partake in a long-term monitoring project regarding the Academy's living roof. The Living Roof Project involves the Naturalist Center staff exposing local youth (ages 12 and older) to the many different native plants and animals that call the Roof their home.
Reservations are required for this event. Since the Living Roof Project is limited in the number of people who can participate, it's important to act fast to capture one of 15 available spaces. If the event is full, additional chances to enjoy this event include July 23rd, August 16th, and August 20th.
From 9:30am to 12:30pm on Sunday, July 19th, your child will be able to explore critters, birds, insects, and the intriguing ecosystem that makes up the Living Roof. It's an opportunity your budding explorer shouldn’t pass up. The price to enjoy the Living Roof Project is $3. For more information and to reserve your space, contact 415-379-8000. Participants will meet at the Business Entrance reception desk and should come prepared wearing clothing appropriate for outdoor fun.
