Soccer

It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of the World Cup or anticipate the latest news on David Beckham; soccer is a popular sport in California as the weather offers a comforting backdrop for both friendly and competitive play. When looking for an amazing natural scene to host your next soccer match, the Golden Gate Park is one of the best recreational settings about the city.

Who Plays Soccer at Golden Gate Park?

With 10,000 seats surrounding a field and public all-weather track, many different sporting teams reserve Kezar Stadium for practices and matches. Located on 755 Stanyan St, an assortment of high school leagues and recreational tournaments are held at the stadium after arrangements are made through the Recreation and Park athletic office, (753-7032).

The Golden Gate Park also provides a space for practice, pick-up competition, and games for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s Mission Division (a non-profit city agency). This association is responsible for offering two recreational soccer leagues throughout the year.  Soccer players across San Francisco can be seen scoring goals for the Jose Coronado Memorial Futsal, which is an indoor soccer crew, whose league runs from January to April and plays across a variety of gyms about the city.  The 7 a Side Outdoor Soccer League can be enjoyed from June to August with games and practices held at three different main fields in San Francisco.

Soccer at Kezar Stadium

Kezar Stadium will also accommodate the California Victory, a USL First Division professional soccer club for San Francisco, which is recognized as an expansion team slated for the 2007 season. A milestone is accomplished through the establishment of the team because it will be the first European-owned squad to compete in the United Soccer League, as well as the first USL First Division lineup located in California since the San Diego Flash folded in 2001.

Additional Soccer Fields in Golden Gate Park

To enjoy soccer in other areas of the park, you will find soccer pitches located at the Beach Chalet soccer field situated opposite 48th Avenue. Polo Field also offers a popular space for soccer matches. You should know that reservations (at no charge) are necessary, which can be arranged by calling 831-5510.
